Literary Festival Lino Poster

A friend who has been involved in organising a literary festival asked if I’d like to create a lino-print poster for the event. This is what I came up with. All of the elements of the image (excluding the date) were printed from lino blocks but were then compiled together in Photoshop and the colours adjusted to match the colour scheme used in the official event advertising.

Hand Stamped Christmas Cards

Robin Linocut Stamp

Although my Christmas cards this year are handmade I didn’t make each one individually by hand in the same way I have in previous years, instead I created the design in Illustrator and printed them from the PC. To give them a more hand-crafted feel I decided to create a stamp from lino & use it to stamp each card and envelope. I decided on a nice simple robin and holly design in red ink. He’s pictured above tidied up in Illustrator, and below as he looked when stamped by hand on the inside of each card and outside of each envelope. That kept me busy for some time!

Ruan Lingyu (阮玲玉) Lino Print

This is my second film star lino cut print in a couple of weeks. This time the subject is Ruan Lingyu, 阮玲玉. Ruan was a big star of the Shanghai film industry in the 1930s. She has become an idol partly due to her suicide at the age of 24, which is attributed to a combination of abusive relationships with her lovers and pressure from the press.  I discovered Ruan through Liu Ye’s beautiful paintings of her, and then went on to watch her films and admire her work as an actress. Her films are fairly easy to get hold of, especially her most famous film The Goddess, and also check out the Stanley Kwan film about her Centre Stage featuring Maggie Cheung.

Courtesan linocut print inspired by Harunobu

I’ve neglected the blog lately as there’s been so much going on at work and at home. Last Sunday, however, I managed to find some time to do some printing. Pictured below is the end result. It’s a four-colour linocut print, size 4″ x 6″. I’m new to working with multiple colours / layers so you’ll see that I missed the mark slightly in places!

The image is based on a woodblock print of the famous courtesan Shiratama by Harunobu.

In addition to the four-colour prints I also printed some monochrome greeting cards.

Kyoko Otonashi Lino Cut Print

I haven’t posted lately as me and Phil have been in Cornwall for the past week, sans wi-fi. Today, however, I managed to get time for printing & to update the blog. Below are some new prints – printed this morning – of Kyoko Otonashi from Rumiko Takahashi’s manga series Maison Ikkoku. The print was based on an original Takahashi sketch – I just took a few liberties with the kimono print and tried a few variations, pictured below.

Here’s a monochrome version of the Kyoko print, without any pattern on Kyoko’s kimono:
